Thanks, and ever thanks.
The Addiction Inoculation came out a month ago, and has done really well thanks in large part to you. Yes, a three-page feature in People Magazine helped, but short of an Instagram shout-out from Kristen Bell, the most powerful endorsement an author can get is a heartfelt recommendation from one reader to another.
So thank you, readers for recommending my book. You are the reason The Addiction Inoculation is selling, and more importantly, being read.
While bestseller lists are nice, I have a bigger vision for The Addiction Inoculation, and that’s where I need your help.
Just 57 percent of schools in this nation are teaching any sort of substance use prevention program, and of that 57 percent, only ten percent are evidence-based. Super depressing, right?
Nope. it’s a massive opportunity.
The best evidence-based, effective substance use prevention programs already exist, and they are based on a very familiar model, one that is likely already in use in the schools in your area. The very best school-based substance use prevention programs are, at their core, great social-emotional learning curricula with robust health and safety components.
We don’t have to reinvent the wheel in order to save kids’ lives. The wheel exists, we just have to put it on the cart and get it moving in the right direction.
In order to do that, I need to get The Addiction Inoculation - and specifically chapter nine, Georgia’s chapter - into the hands of school administrators. Research shows that when quality prevention programs have the full-throated support of school administrators, they are considerably more effective in preventing substance use in kids.
So here’s the plan: thanks to a generous donor who shares my vision, I have one hundred copies of The Addiction Inoculation here in my office, and I plan to start mailing them out to school administrators across the country next week.
Edited to add: this giveaway has closed and the 100 books are being sent out soon! Thanks for the over 1,000 entries!
Thank you, again. Substance use disorder is preventable (and treatable), so let’s all push a little so we can get this cart moving.
